# Organization preferences

Grafana preferences are basic settings. They control the Grafana UI theme, home dashboard, time zone, and so on.

Preferences are sometimes confusing because they can be set at four different levels, listed from highest level to lowest:

- **Server -** Affects all users on the Grafana server. Set by a [Grafana server admin](https://grafana.com/docs/grafana/next/administration/roles-and-permissions/#grafana-server-administrators).
- **Organization -** Affects all users in an organization. Set by an [Organization admin](https://grafana.com/docs/grafana/next/administration/roles-and-permissions/#organization-roles).
- **Team -** Affects all users assigned to a team. Set by an Organization Admin or Team Admin. To learn more about these roles, refer to [Teams and permissions](https://grafana.com/docs/grafana/next/administration/roles-and-permissions/#teams-and-permissions).
- **User account -** Affects the individual user. Set by the user on their own account.

The lowest level always takes precedence. For example, if a user sets their theme to **Light**, then their visualization of Grafana displays the light theme. Nothing at any higher level can override that.

If the user is aware of the change and intended it, then that’s great! But if the user is a Server Admin who made the change to their user preferences a long time ago, they might have forgotten they did that. Then, if that Server Admin is trying to change the theme at the server level, they’ll get frustrated as none of their changes have any effect that they can see. (Also, the users on the server might be confused, because *they* can see the server-level changes!)

## Change the default home page

When you sign in to Grafana, you see the Grafana home page. Click the Grafana icon or **Home** in the breadcrumb to return to it. You can replace it with a dashboard for the server, an organization, a team, or your personal user account. This topic explains how Grafana picks the home page and provides instructions for each task.

Some tasks require certain permissions. For more information about roles, refer to [Roles and permissions](https://grafana.com/docs/grafana/next/administration/roles-and-permissions/).

### How Grafana picks the home page

Grafana checks these sources in order and uses the first one that’s set:

1. The **Home Dashboard** preference. Grafana checks the user level first, then the team level, then the organization level, and uses the first level that has a dashboard set.
2. The [`home_page`](https://grafana.com/docs/grafana/next/setup-grafana/configure-grafana/#home_page) configuration option. Grafana redirects to this path.
3. The [`default_home_dashboard_path`](https://grafana.com/docs/grafana/next/setup-grafana/configure-grafana/#default_home_dashboard_path) configuration option. Grafana shows the dashboard from this JSON file.
4. The Grafana home page.

The **Home Dashboard** field at every level also offers **Grafana home**. Select it to ignore the dashboards set at higher levels and show the instance default: `home_page`, `default_home_dashboard_path`, or the Grafana home page. For example, if your organization sets a dashboard and you select **Grafana home** in your profile, you see the instance default instead of the organization’s dashboard. At the organization level, **Grafana home** and an empty field have the same effect, because the next level up is the server configuration.

Clear the field to inherit the home page from the next level. For example, a user with an empty field gets their team’s dashboard, or the organization’s dashboard if the team hasn’t set one.

### Set the home page for the server

Users with the Grafana Server Admin flag on their account or access to the configuration file can set the home page for all users on the server in two ways:

- [`home_page`](https://grafana.com/docs/grafana/next/setup-grafana/configure-grafana/#home_page) in the `[users]` section redirects users to a path in Grafana, such as an app plugin page.
- [`default_home_dashboard_path`](https://grafana.com/docs/grafana/next/setup-grafana/configure-grafana/#default_home_dashboard_path) in the `[dashboards]` section shows a dashboard from a JSON file.

If you set both, `home_page` takes precedence. Both settings apply to users who haven’t set a home dashboard preference and to users who select **Grafana home**. A dashboard set in a user, team, or organization preference overrides both.

#### Redirect users to a page

Set `home_page` to a path that matches a frontend route. The path must start with a slash.

ini ![Copy code to clipboard](https://grafana.com/media/images/icons/icon-copy-small-2.svg) Copy

```ini
[users]
home_page = /a/my-app/home
```

#### \[Optional] Convert an existing dashboard into a JSON file

1. Navigate to the page of the dashboard you want to use as the home dashboard.
2. Click the **Share** button at the top right of the screen.
3. In the Export tab, click **Save to file**. Grafana converts the dashboard to a JSON file and saves it locally.

#### Use a JSON file as the home dashboard

1. Save your JSON file somewhere that Grafana can access it. For example, in the Grafana `data` folder of Grafana.
2. Update your configuration file to set the path to the JSON file. Refer to [default\_home\_dashboard\_path](https://grafana.com/docs/grafana/next/setup-grafana/configure-grafana/#default_home_dashboard_path) for more information about modifying the Grafana configuration files.

ini ![Copy code to clipboard](https://grafana.com/media/images/icons/icon-copy-small-2.svg) Copy

```ini
[dashboards]
# Path to a custom default home dashboard. If empty, Grafana shows the Grafana home page.
default_home_dashboard_path = data/main-dashboard.json
```

Replacing `public/dashboards/home.json` on disk is not supported. If you previously customized home that way, move the file and set `default_home_dashboard_path` to its path.

### Set the home dashboard for your organization

Organization administrators can choose a default home dashboard for their organization. Teams and users inherit it unless they set their own dashboard or select **Grafana home**.

1. Click **Administration** in the left-side menu.
2. Click **General**.
3. Click **Default preferences**.
4. In the **Home Dashboard** field, search for and select the dashboard that you want to use, or select **Grafana home** to show the instance default.
5. Click **Save**.

### Set the home dashboard for your team

Organization administrators and Team Admins can set a default home dashboard for all users on a team. The team’s dashboard overrides the organization’s dashboard for team members who haven’t set their own.

1. Click **Administration** in the left-side menu, **Users and access**, and select **Teams**.
2. Click the team for which you want to change the home dashboard.
3. Click the **Settings** tab.
4. In the **Home Dashboard** field, search for and select the dashboard that you want to use. Select **Grafana home** to opt the team out of the organization’s dashboard and show the instance default instead.
5. Click **Save**.

### Set your personal home dashboard

You can choose your own personal home dashboard. This setting overrides the home dashboards set at the team and organization levels.

1. Click the user icon in the top right corner of the page and select **Profile**.
2. In the **Home Dashboard** field, search for and select the dashboard that you want to use. Select **Grafana home** to opt out of your team’s or organization’s dashboard and show the instance default instead.
3. Click **Save**.
